The Evangelical Sunset

Sometime in the 20th century, a particular image became almost synonymous with the urgency of missionary activity in the world. It was used consistently in missionary slideshows and later in mission agency films and videos. This image had one singular message for the Church: “The sun is setting on this age of grace!”
Well, the “missionary sunset” or “evangelical sunset,” as it’s come to be known, is a bit of cliché these days. It personally doesn’t bother me that much (in fact, I kinda like sunsets), but then again, I’m still relatively new to the mission world. If I’ve grown a bit of a bias against it, that’s because I’ve had the opportunity now to sit with some of the older SIM missios and hear their giggles and groans as the “evangelical sunset” image appears on the screen during someone’s presentation.
Well, if you haven’t completely rejected the “evangelical sunset” or perhaps you’re still gung-ho and committed to joining the long line of “those who have gone before” (and used this image in their slideshows/PowerPoints/videos), check this out: Mary Decker of SIM Senegal has posted an entire set of sunset images taken by her husband Dave during a recent visit to Liberia. This would be an excellent place to start as you search to find that “perfect” way to end your next talk or presentation (wink, wink).
