Ministry in the world’s urban centers is one of the Top 10 priorities of SIM, and Brian Seim of SIM Canada is the Champion who is leading the way in identifying innovative new ministry models that are relevant in these urban contexts. But you may be wondering, what are the megacities of the world anyway? This article (from Air Canada’s in-flight magazine En Route) actually has some good information, but the real treat is this interactive world map produced by the BBC that projects the growth of megacities out to 2015. (HT: Tabitha Plueddemann) [Note to Nigel: Sorry, mate, New Zealand doesn't even show up on the map!]
On the flip side of the whole megacities phenomenon is a “growing” ghost cities phenomenon. Forbes magazine recently published this article entitled “Ghost Cities of the Future,” which lists the places in the world that will be “altered beyond recognition” by the year 2100. These cities include (among others) Timbuktu in Mali, Banjul in Gambia, Leipzig in Germany, Manchester and Liverpool in the UK, Detroit and San Francisco in the U.S., and (surprisingly) Mexico City in Mexico. (You’ll have to read the article to find out why that one is on the list!) (HT: Tony Sheng)
