Leading Well in Our Digital World

My friend DJ Chuang at Leadership Network has launched an exciting new team blog which aims to answer the question, “I am a senior leader of my church but not the techie. What do I need to know in the tech world now and for the future? What do I need to keep my eye on?”
DJ writes, “We are aiming to unpack the technical jargon and gobblygook so that non-techies and church leaders can better understand how various digital technologies can be used in the church to connect its members and attenders as well as reach its surrounding communities and even the world.”
Topics to be covered include the Internet, social networking, Mobile phone devices, podcasting, vodcasting, blogging, wiki, databases, ChMS (church management systems), video techniques, etc. So this is more than just a blog about “Church 2.0″ or “Internet evangelism”—it’s really a broad initiative to help resource church (and, I would add, mission) leaders with ideas and information about emerging technologies. This is definitely a site you’ll want to subscribe to!
Stephen Shields has a great post today entitled “Toward a New Model of Leadership Development” in which he writes, “While a new model of leadership development for Christ’s church is now possible, the most holistic approach will not limit that model exclusively to online contexts. There is still an aspect of leadership that must be caught, not taught, and that best occurs in face-to-face—even life-on-life—contexts.” I think this is an excellent caveat to the whole leadership/technology discussion. This is something Shane Hipps addresses in his 2005 book The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture, which I hope to begin blogging through here in the near future.
Related to “life-on-life” leadership development, former SIM International Director Jim Plueddemann has posted a rough draft of chapter two to his forthcoming book Leadership & Culture: Challenges for the Worldwide Church. The stories he shares here are absolutely fantastic! Discipleship and mentoring are high priorities for SIM in these days, and I’d highly recommend reading what Jim’s written here to get some inspiration and to really understand the journey of SIM as an organization. Great stuff.
