Digital Storytelling

When I visited East Asia in May, I had the privilege of meeting Angeline Koh, one of the creative people who is “giving voice to the disciplemaking vision” of Navigators in Singapore.
Angeline emailed me this week to tell me more about “digital storytelling.” As Angeline explains on her blog, quoting Leslie Rule of the Digital Storytelling Association, “Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights.”
Here’s an example of Angeline’s digital storytelling work—this is the story behind the story of a book she authored with a veteran missionary in Myanmar (it’s very informative and very entertaining!):
Last month, Angeline met with the Executive Director of Singapore’s Book Council, who has asked her to “be one of the catalysts to spark off a DS movement in Singapore.” She’ll be assisting Rule and another teacher with a digital storytelling “boot camp” in September. I’m so excited for Angeline and for others to get this kind of digital storytelling training.
A quick GoodSearch uncovered some helpful resources for digital storytelling from the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, California. Unfortunately I couldn’t find an official website for the Digital Storytelling Association or any other information about other digital storytelling workshops or training that may be happening in other parts of the world.
I did however discover that Rule is on staff at public television station KQED as Project Supervisor of the Digital Storytelling Initiative, which offers a quick overview of the four-step process they teach on digital storytelling, as well as a more in-depth “How-To Guide” to digital storytelling.
