In March, I had the privilege of participating in SIM’s Global Leaders Gathering in Kenya attended by 150+ men and women from all over the world. I just want to share a few “soundbytes” from the conference as conversation starters/food for thought. Please feel free to share your thoughts/feedback in the comments. These quotes from conference speakers pertained specifically to the work of communication in mission, which is why I am sharing them here. Enjoy:
“Proclamation involves translation …” —Bishop Zac Nirinigiye (Uganda), emphasizing the importance of learning the language of our audience
“We are more holy than God …” —Dr. Funmi Para-Mallam (Nigeria), speaking about our discussions (or lack of discussions) of gender and sexuality, because we don’t talk openly about this vital aspect of our lives
“The Church’s message in the West is alien to people because it’s gone cold. … The words that we use have little traction with people.” —Rev. Simon Walker (UK)
“God calls us to encounter ‘the other’ as a friend, and … to be sensitive to the footprints we are leaving on each other’s stories.” —Rev. Simon Walker
“We must articulate a new vocabulary in which knowledge is not organized into boxes but is only found in encounter …” —Rev. Simon Walker
“The testimony that people need to hear is what God has done. That is the transforming story.” —Bishop Zac Niringiye
