“We Are All Witnesses”

I admit, I’m not a huge professional basketball fan, and I don’t talk about basketball on this blog, well, ever because it doesn’t usually relate to the topic of kingdom journalism. (I used to play basketball regularly with John Piper, though, so that might have to be another blog post …) But when I saw this Nike ad on Eugene Cho’s blog, I just had to grab it and post it here:

That’s Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James who recently made an exciting three-point shot with one second left on the clock to defeat the Orlando Magic in an NBA playoff game. (See the video on Eugene’s blog.) Yes, the shot was exciting and fun to watch. There are a lot of other adjectives that it probably deserves, as well. James is clearly a gifted athlete who is coming into his own before our very eyes …
But let’s be clear: The things professional athletes are able to do on the field of play are really nothing compared to the mighty deeds God is doing in our world today—in and through those of us who choose to follow Jesus and join him in his mission of reconciling all of creation (including sports!) back to God.
Yes, we are all witnesses! But thank God we have much more to talk about than the latest Lebron James highlight reel.
