CauseWired: What is “the Largest Online Lab for Change”?

In the introduction to CauseWired: Plugging In, Getting Involved, Changing the World, Tom Watson writes:
“[This] book is about large numbers of users, what they do online, and how they are changing the relationship between communications and causes. To me, Facebook is incredibly valuable as the largest online lab for these forces of change. … The Internet itself is a social network; the companies that use it to create markets are interesting, but the great networked collaboration—the conversation—is much more compelling.”
According to AllFacebook.com, Facebook recently surpassed 225 million users worldwide. To put this into perspective: If Facebook were a country, it would be the fifth largest country in the world. By the end of 2009, Facebook is projected to reach 300 million users, surpassing Indonesia (230 million pop.) as the fourth largest and fast approaching the United States (306.5 million pop.) to vie for being the third largest population in the world.
